Full-time Operations Manager Touring & Outreach

Opera Australia is Australia’s national opera company, presenting some fourteen operas annually in a repertory environment, musicals, regional tours, outdoor events and concerts. As Australia’s largest performing arts organisation, the company presents close to 700 performances annually across its diverse operations.

The Touring & Outreach department is a producing unit within Opera Australia. Its aim is to bring great opera to all Australians, regardless of where they live. The annual core activities of the Touring & Outreach department include a nation-wide Regional Tour of a full scale opera and two Schools Tours to primary school students across metropolitan and regional Victoria and New South Wales. Additionally, Touring & Outreach provides education workshops and community projects, which are especially tailored to meet the community’s needs and resources. The Touring & Outreach department also develops new works that will be presented in new platforms such as The Rabbits, a new, music theatre / operatic work based on the illustrated children’s book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan.

Reporting to the Executive Producer, Touring & Outreach; the Operations Manager will support the Executive Producer in the financial, staff and administrative management of the department. As a senior member of the team, the position carries a significant responsibility for the overall management of the Touring & Outreach program of activities. Duties include management of office functions, supervision of opera productions and outreach programs and financial oversight. The position is responsible for the financial and administrative processes that facilitate the efficient and effective operation of the department, including all aspects of budget planning, expenditure control, financial reporting and staff management.

To apply you will have experience in performing arts management (or related field) and in delivering operational support and continuous improvement. You will have demonstrated conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills and proven experience in project management. You will demonstrate well developed oral and written communication skills, including effectiveness in negotiation and consultation and you will have a successful track record of managing a team of direct and indirect reports. Competency across Microsoft Office products, Excel and database software is necessary. Desirable skills would include relevant tertiary qualifications, good knowledge of the performing arts industry in Australia and sound knowledge and understanding of technical production processes.

This position is based in Melbourne with some interstate travel as required.
