8 performers for \'Alien Chooks in Lithgow\', Newtown Theatre
at Newtown Theatre - Sydney
Outline: A new Australian work by playwright Gabrielle McIntosh, ‘Alien Chooks in Lithgow’ is an interesting concoction of abstract, comic sci-fi-esque physical theatre. It is essentially a transformation story, involving an on again-off again couple, Violet and Rex, his 14 y.o. isolated son Ricco, and two alien chooks C1 and C2 from the Planet Clare. C1 and C2 plan only to stop off at Lithgow to refuel their ship with potato crisps, but unwittingly end up doing a lot more for the town.
General Details: This play will be directed by Heidi Lupprian as part of Newtown Theatre’s Oct/Nov season, 20th Oct – 7th Nov, Tues - Sat. Rehearsals commence early April, with a break from July to mid August. From this point onwards, rehearsals will continue until the opening of the play. A rehearsal schedule will be marked out according to the selected actors’ availability. Actors will be paid on a profit share basis and there are also considerations being made about pitching this play to high schools.
Characters: Currently we are looking for 4 female and 4 male actors to play the roles of 25 characters.
C1 – Female alien chook from Planet Clare. Open age. Must have basic juggling ability. Aptitude for physical theatre an advantage.
C2 – Male alien chook. As above.
Violet – A heavy drinker and sometimes girlfriend of Rex. 30+
Rex – Also a heavy drinker forced to retire from State Rail. 35+
Ricco – 14 y.o. son of Rex, quite lonely, is bullied at school. Suitable for a male 20 years or under, young looking.
Vince – 14 y.o. school bully, pretends to be tough. Suitable for a male 20 years or under, young looking.
Other characters that are a part of this play and to be doubled by actors include Beatrice the blind psychic (35+), Wild Hobo Woman (50+), Eddie the barman (35+), Vince’s bitter grandmother (50+), DOCS warden and various staff and students of Lithgow public school.
Audition Details: Auditions are being held on Sat 21st and Sun 22nd March, 10-4pm and will run in 15 minute intervals. You must perform a 2-3minute monologue and, optionally, a short, self devised movement piece, which can incorporate your circus and/or dance skills -This will be an advantage and highly regarded as the play is physical theatre based. You will then be asked to cold read a small excerpt from the play.
Please email Heidi Lupprian at h.lupprian@hotmail.com with your C.V, headshot,
and preferred audition day and time(s). We will then get back to you in regards to location and your allocated time.
