Volunteer Man 1 - Songs for a New World

at Irregular Productions - Adelaide

Irregular Productions presents the South Australian Amateur Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World, January 2011 at The Opera Studio, Netley.

With an emotionally charged score of contemporary pop/rock theatre music, the audience is transported from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue. Songs for a New World features an array of characters, ranging from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto, to a woman whose dream of marrying rich leaves her in a soulless marriage, to the woman behind the man behind Christmas.

The show sits on the boundary between musical and song cycle; it is a series of songs connected by theme rather than narrative. Each member of the cast takes on multiple characters telling their own individual story, learning how to survive in a new set of circumstances, even against seemingly overwhelming odds, and coming to grips with a world in which the old rules do not apply.

“It\'s about one moment. It\'s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” -Jason Robert Brown
