Kiss Me Kate (1997 Revised) - China Tour 2011

Lewis Liu of Hebei Silang Performance Agency Pty Ltd (a sub-branch of Armstrong Arts, China http://armstrongartsltd.com/index.php) and John Michael Burdon (ABN: 78650128105), the Artistic Director of newly formed independent professional theatre company based in Sydney, NSW BRAVE TOUCH PRODUCTIONS are joining forces to present a 3 month tour of Cole Porter’s classic musical KISS ME KATE (1997 Revised) from July – October 2011 featuring an all Australian cast.
This document is for all casting agents and performer’s representatives as well as independent and freelance actors, dancers, singers and performers to gain all information about the upcoming auditions for this production to be held at Sydney Dance Company in April 2011.
With a 7 week part-time rehearsal process in premiere Sydney venues, an experienced production crew and all expenses paid trip to China for three months with the chance to perform to the Chinese public; this is one opportunity not to be missed.
We are looking for performers of a professional standard but of varying experience to come and audition for this production. A fully realized English speaking professional production of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate (the first winner of Best Musical at the Tony Awards in 1949), this production will tour Beijing, Shanghai, Ghengzhou, Shenzhen and Hanshou in China.
Performers are encouraged to send through their CV and headshot to the details provided in this document no later than 5pm Friday 22nd April to gain an audition slot for this production.
This document will contain character briefings, the audition process, details of the production, the rehearsal process and the entitlements successful persons will have access to when cast.
We are looking for 13 male musical theatre performers and 9 female musical theatre performers to complete the ensemble for this production.

Requirements:
Please prepare 16-32 bars of any Cole Porter song from any Cole Porter musical (including Kiss Me Kate) as well as a contrasting classical musical theatre song (pre-dating 1970) that showcases your range
Please perform your Cole Porter song choice in the original key it was written in the musical
Please perform your chosen songs in its original key. We will not accept transposed songs
A pianist will be available at your audition as well as a CD player
We will accept sheet music or a CD backing (with no vocals on backing track).
Please ensure that your CD is correctly cued to your song.
If you have sheet music, you will have a small amount of time before your audition with the pianist to arrange tempo
Acapella singing will not be accepted
You may be asked to sing scale at your audition
You will be expected to show a fully realized vocal and acting performance at your audition.
All persons MUST attend a vocal audition to be eligible for a callback audition
DANCE:
Ballet, Jazz and Tap training
Some experience in partner work (Latin American Ballroom – jive, jitterbug, lindy hop, swing dance) or the ability to pick choreography up quickly an advantage
Choreography will be taught on the day by Choreographer John Michael Burdon
Please ensure to wear correct dance attire and footwear (soft jazz shoe) for your audition

SUCCESSFUL CAST:
The Promoters (Hebei Silang Performance Agency Pty Ltd & Brave Touch Productions) shall at its own cost and in connection with the engagements:
a. Provide and pay for international air transportation for the full performer party of passengers;
b. Provide and pay for four-star hotel accommodation in 23 twin-share rooms with full hot buffet breakfast included.
c. Provide and pay for all domestic air transportation for the full performer party of passengers.
d. Provide all necessary transportation between airports and hotels, hotels and venues etc as required by the schedule, in 2 luxury air-conditioned 55 seat coaches;
e. Pay for and arrange on behalf of the Performer all necessary visas, work permits and any other requirements;
f. Arrange and pay for all parking costs into and out of the Venue (if necessary) and any taxes relating thereto to assist the Performer;
g. Ensure that venues are well-heated, well-ventilated, air-conditioned, well-lit and clean;
h. Ensure that the venues and performance areas are safe and suitable for the purposes of the Engagement and complies with all applicable laws, health and safety requirements and regulations for the time being in force and is free of any structural defect reasonably likely to cause damage or injury to the Performer or any property of the Performer;
i. Ensure that the cast and crew of the Performer party have enough time at each venue to rehearse the production on the venue stage with correct technical capabilities and bump in/bump out procedures.
j. Provide all necessary facilities at the venues including competent stage technician and adequate staff and box office facilities; ensure all costume fittings with the wardrobe department are organized upon arrival in China
k. Make available for the Performer secure changing rooms at the venues as follows:
• 1 private dressing room near the stage with mineral water provided for the Performer Leader
• 1 large dressing room with mineral water provided for Female performers
• 1 large dressing room with mineral water provided for Male performers
l. Provide refreshments before all the Performance - mineral water, tea and coffee, bread, fruits;
m. Provide the Performer with 5 pairs of complimentary tickets for seats of best quality for each Performance and 50 programs and posters for each Performance; the complimentary tickets cannot be sold for any purpose
n. Will pay a wage to all performers based on Sundays during the tour on a weekly basis. Payment will be the following (based on a maximum of 8 shows per week – AUD amount):

Main Lead Roles (Fred, Lilli, Lois, Bill) - $866.00 per week
Secondary Lead Roles (Paul, Hattie, Harry, Gangster 1, Gangster 2, Harrison) - $817.00 per week
Ensemble (Male & Female) - $670.00 per week
Swing Roles (1 Male & 1 Female chosen from Ensemble) - $850.00 per week
Regardless of how many performances there are per week – example 6 performances in 1st week of tour and 8 performances in 2nd week of tour – the wage will remain consistent per week)
REHEARSALS AND SCHEDULES:
Rehearsals will be over a 7 week period part-time. As the production companies are newly formed and independent and will be paying for all costs (except meals and personal items); the cast will NOT be paid for the rehearsal period. However, as a sign of good faith, a mid-rehearsal payment of $1000.00 AUD will be paid to each performer of the cast after the 4th week of rehearsal.
Rehearsals will be Tuesday and Thursday evening 6 – 10:30pm at Studio 1, Seymour Centre Sydney NSW
Rehearsals will also be on 6 Saturdays 10am – 6pm at Studio 1 Dance Alive Studios (Chippendale NSW – home of Dancing with the Stars Rehearsals). These rehearsals have been allocated to ensure people can still work on other productions or jobs while they rehearse.
We ask that persons do consider their availability and commitment to the project and longer rehearsal period before auditioning. We will attempt to be as flexible as possible with cast in terms of other productions (matinee shows, other auditions etc) however we do ask that prospective cast members allow for this rehearsal period to factor in their decision to audition. Cast will be allocated proper lunch or dinner breaks during rehearsals.
Rehearsals will commence on Tuesday May 10th 2011 and finish on Thursday June 30th 2011
Tour Dates
The tour shall start on Thursday July 14th 2011 with departure on July 10th 2011 and will conclude on Sunday 9th October with departure for Sydney on October 10th 2011
The start date of the tour may change between now and audition date. If this does change, it will be pushed back by two weeks maximum with departure for China on 30th July.
We do encourage persons to keep the months of July – October 2011 available as cast may go to China early to work with the wardrobe and staging departments before Master Tech rehearsals in the performance venue.
Auditioners MUST have a valid passport at the time of auditioning and must be legally allowed to work in China for the period allocated.
Persons auditioning must be 18 years of age minimum at the time of auditions.
