About the Play
In this hearty Australian comedy, university student Lewis is faced with hilarious and unique challenges when he agrees to direct a show starring the inmates of a psychiatric institution.
Despite his vision of a modestly simple production, Lewis finds himself at the helm of Mozart's grand romantic opera, Cosi Fan Tutte.
Guided by the rambunctious Roy, a manic-depressive patient with a love for music and theatre, Lewis attempts to assemble a cast from a group of inmates, from the self-confessed junkie Julie to the invasive pyromaniac Doug. And if this weren't enough, none of them can sing!
Meanwhile, the pressure on Lewis from his university friends to organise Australia’s largest Vietnam War protest makes him question where true madness lies: inside or outside the asylum.
Set in Melbourne in 1970, Cosi reflects the sensitive examination of love, lies and infidelity as well as comments on the social themes and ideologies in the time of the Vietnam War.
Loosely based on personal experience, Louis Nowra has crafted a funny and insightful play about ambition, political ideals, mental illness, the fragility of identity, and how being creative often requires a touch of madness.
About the roles:
ZAC
Zac is he would like to think, the purest of musicians, the melodies of the great composers seeping through his very veins. However, to everyone else, he is a complete loony. A lifetime of institutions has left Zac in perpetual catatonia, sexually frustrated and on enough lithium to kill a rhinoceros.
HENRY
Henry is a former criminal lawyer well past his prime. Don't let his shy and unassuming nature fool you into taking him at face-value. Like Roy, he has spent much of his adult life in institutions.
