Present Laughter by Noel Coward
Director: Karen Miller
February 2012 Production
Audition Date: Tuesday Oct 25th, 2011
Venue: Pavilion Theatre, Doran Dr, Castle Hill Showground, Castle Hill
Time: Doors open at 7 pm for a 7.30 start
The Play
‘Present Laughter’ is a comedy by Noel Coward. Set in London in the late 1940s, it’s the story of famous actor Garry Essendine, who’s trying to cope with a variety of disasters – not the least of which is a mid-life crisis – as he prepares to go on tour in Africa.
Note: British accents will be required for this production.
Ages stated are character ages. If you think you can play either up or down, go for it.
Characters (in order of script appearance):
Daphne Stillington: early 20s, a budding starlet who thinks she’s in love with Gary.
Miss Erikson: 40-40, the Swedish housekeeper. Dour, and not very impressed with all the goings on.
Fred: mid 20s to 40, Garry Essendine’s valet. Dapper, chirpy, doesn’t take any notice of Garry’s theatrics.
Monica Reed: early 40s, Garry’s secretary. Professional, reliable, knows all of Garry’s foibles, seen it all, sarcastic.
Garry Essendine: 49, an actor. Flamboyant, theatrical, egotistical and very clever. Under all the nonsense, very shrewd.
Liz Essendine: early to mid 40s, Garry’s ex-wife. An actress. Professional, tolerant, canny. Never stopped loving Garry.
Ronald Maule: early to mid 20s, would-be playwright, insecure, truculent, starstruck by Garry.
Henry Lypplatt: early 50s, an actor. Long time friend of Garry. A bit nervy, some marital woes
Morris Dixon: mid 40s, an actor, good looking, confident, a bit in Garry’s shadow.
Joanna Lypplatt: mid 30s, Henry’s wife, an actress. Sophisticated, sexy, unfaithful and manipulative
Lady Saltburn: 50s, Daphen’s upper class, society conscious aunt. Wants a stage career for her niece.
The audition will involve readings from the script.
