Volunteer [title of show] - AUDITIONS - Vic

at Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc Victoria

Fab Nobs Theatre Inc and Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc are proud to announce the auditions for the Victorian Amateur Premiere production of [title of show], to be presented in two venues in June 2013.

Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers, hear about a new musical theatre festival. However, the deadline for submissions is a mere three weeks away. With nothing to lose, the pair decides to try to create something new with the help of their friends Susan, Heidi and Larry on the eighty-eights.

With the cast in place, Jeff and Hunter begin a conversation about what to write about. Eventually, Jeff suggests they write about what to write about. They make a pact to write up until the festival’s deadline and dream about the show changing their lives.

[title of show] - taken from the space on the festival’s application form which asks for the [title of show] - follows Hunter and Jeff and their friends on their journey through the gauntlet of creative self-expression. In the span of 90 minutes they write and perform their show at the festival and learn lessons about themselves as people, friends and artists.

[title of show] is, above all, a love letter to the musical theatre - a uniquely American art form - and to the joy of collaboration. The musical received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 2009.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

This is a show that relies entirely on the skill of the 4 cast members – apart from 4 chairs and a keyboard, you’re all we’ve got! The production team will be looking to cast a quartet with great chemistry, and natural comic timing – think conversations rather than punch-lines. American (standard) accent required. Open to any ethnicity, and suggested ages are a guide only. We are not looking for particular body-types, but please be aware that actors auditioning for the roles of Hunter or Jeff should be comfortable with being shirtless (briefly) on stage. Actors auditioning for the role of Heidi will also need to be comfortable with appearing on stage shirtless (in a bra). Actors auditioning for the role of Susan can keep eating pizza.
Hunter (M) Light Tenor - C3 – D5, strong up to B4

Age range: 20 -35
Brief description: Hunter wrote the book for [title of show], and dreams about making it to Broadway and one day winning a Tony Award. Hunter is not one to get bogged down in details, he’s the more laid-back of the two guys. Hunter enjoys watching trashy reality television and 1980’s Mega Musicals.

Jeff (M) Tenor/ Baritenor – C3 – B4, strong up to G4

Age range: 20 - 35
Brief description: Jeff is the show’s composer, a Broadway enthusiast who especially likes obscure musicals. Jeff’s a realist, and while he has a great passion for creating, he worries about what others will think of his work. He’s the more anxious and realistic of the two guys.

Heidi (F) Mezzo Soprano – E3 – F#5, strong down to G3

Age range: 20-35
Brief description: Heidi moved to New York to pursue her dreams of being an actress, and out of the four friends has the most Broadway experience (featuring in a number of ensembles and understudying lead roles). She is the ‘new girl’ of the group, having only worked with Jeff previously. She dreams of one day originating a role on Broadway, and is the “real singer” of the group.

Susan (F) Mezzo Soprano/ Contralto – E3 – Eb5

Age range: 20-35
Brief description: Self-deprecating Susan is a ‘Down Town’ artist who works a day job she hates to support her artistic endeavours. She uses comedy to cover her doubts about her singing ability and is at first reluctant about being friends with the ‘new girl’ Heidi who she sees as a social and theatrical threat. She's the quirkiest of the bunch, prone to making inappropriate comments. Susan doesn't take herself too seriously, and is fearless, despite her inferiority complex.
