Squabbalogic is an independent co-operative company responsible for the Australian or Sydney premiere productions of ‘Reefer Madness!’, ‘Forbidden Broadway’, and ‘Thrill Me.’ Participants in our productions will be doing so on a co-operative basis under the terms of an agreement based upon the MEAA co-operative productions agreement (available on request).

Rehearsal Dates: From June 7 2010, tentatively scheduled for Tues/Wed/Fri 10am – 5pm depending on availability with additional rehearsals two weeks prior to opening.
Production Dates: Limited Season from week commencing July 12 2010
(minimum 2 weeks with option for extension)

Auditions: By appointment (submission details below), Monday March 29 from 7.30pm
(additional dates pending), venue TBA.
Callbacks: Wednesday March 31, venue TBA.

Characters:
Jeff – the composer and lyricist. He is a realist who like birds and Wonder Woman.
Hunter – the book writer. He dreams of having his show on Broadway and winning a Tony Award.
Susan – their friend. Corporate whore by day, vampire killer by night.
Heidi – also their friend. Has the most high profile Broadway experience, appearing in The Little Mermaid.

All are late 20’s to mid 30s and live in New York.

About the Show, From the Authors:
You’re reading the official blurb, or short summary, of [title of show]. Blurb. That’s a funny word. We spent a lot of time on this blurb so please read the whole blurb. [title of show] is a musical about two nobodies named Hunter and Jeff who decide to write a completely original musical starring themselves and their attractive and talented ladyfriends, Susan and Heidi. Their musical, [title of show], gets into the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and becomes a hit. Then it gets an off-Broadway production at the Vineyard Theatre, and wins three Obie Awards! Then (drumroll if you’ve got a drum) it’s announced that their musical is going to Broadway (hooray!) and people start seeing this blurb everywhere! They read that The New York Times called [title of show]“DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line.” Fully intrigued, those people snatch up tickets and help make Hunter and Jeff’s life-long dream come true!
Audition Requirements:

For initial auditions we ask that each person prepare two contrasting songs of any origin or genre that demonstrate both their vocal ability and are indicative of their personality. It would be great if one song could have a comedic bent and the other more dramatic. We may only hear a portion of one or both songs, so be prepared to sing your best 16 bars from each. There will be no readings or scene work at the initial auditions, but we will have a good chat with everyone. It is the purpose of these initial auditions to get a sense of your own personality and not be presented with a ‘performance.’ We will also want to hear your excellent US accent, and suggest preparing your songs with this in mind.

SPECIAL NOTE:
DO NOT NOMINATE A PREFERRED ROLE. All men will be considered for Jeff/Hunter and all women Susan/Heidi. Larry has been cast, so he is right out. We are not seeking doppelgangers in look or voice to the creators. We wish to see your own unique personality. Plus, you might think you’re a Susan but everyone else knows you are a Heidi.

The ideal candidates will have had previous experience in operating sound and lights and/or stage managing a travelling show. We need people who are well organized, highly motivated self starters who are reliable and great communicators. The successful applicants will be required to take on a serious level of responsibility. An Australian driver’s license is essential.

Queen Lara Female age range 18 to 35. We are looking for an actor with a real presence. Queen Lara is a corrupt vampire working with humans. In the end she is overthrown by the other vampires and killed. You vampire costume will be sexy and although there is no nudity involved with this role you should be comfortable with other peoples nudity.

Vampire Isabel Female age range 18 to 35. She is one of the vampires who overthrows Queen Lara. Even though you are one of the vampire it is not a small role and you will be featured in 5 scenes. You vampire costume will be sexy and although there is no nudity involved with this role you should be comfortable with other peoples nudity.

Vampire Magda Female age range 18 to 35. Same as Vampire Isabel but you would also be required to do a brief topless scene.

Carl Brady Male age range 25 to 45. You are human a real baddie who doesn’t mind how many humans or vampies he has to kill to get his way.

The Genesian Theatre will be holding auditions for Dead White Males, by David Williamson, on 10th & 11th April 2010. A reading of the play will be held at the theatre, 420 Kent st, on Wednesday 7th April, commencing at 7pm. All are welcome to attend this reading, even if you are not interested in auditioning.

Opening with a literal depiction of Roland Barthes Death of the Author, Dead White Males positions itself with a bang! as David Williamson’s entry into the debate on literary theory which came to a head in the mid 1990’s.

This delicious satire of literary theory goes beyond the university walls, bringing us a touching study into three generations of an Australian family, all depicted by Williamson with his usual wisdom and wit.

Roles available are:

Angela Judd, 19, a university student “an engaging young woman with a sharp mind”

William Shakespeare Not really the historical Bard, but rather a Bard conjured up by Angela to help her work through her own understanding of her studies and herself. He often shows up unasked for, but can be dismissed at a snap of her fingers.

Grant Swain, a university lecturer “charismatic, articulate and animated by the intense certainty that he has a supremely important message to communicate and that he is enormously well equipped to deliver it”.

Melissa, 19, Angela’s friend and fellow student “extremely attractive, knows it and flaunts it”.

Steve, a student “not conventionally handsome but appealing in a run down sort of way”

Col Judd, 77, Angela’s grandfather – The patriarch of the family, seen by all as causing all their problems, and only revealing his true reasons to Angela. He is splendidly revived as Lear, ‘more sinned against than sinning’, perhaps.

Grace Judd, 74, Angela’s grandmother

Martin Judd, 48, Angela’s father – Who feels emasculated by losing his job and having to rely on his wife to support him, and yet somehow feels free after years of working in an office.

Sarah Judd, 46, Angela’s mother – Who has spent her life battling the ‘patriarchy’, but now out of frustration tells Angela the best thing she could do with her life is find a Petruchio, get married, and have five kids.

[Profit-share] Two Stage Managers Required at Eagle's Nest Theatre

Eagle’s Nest Theatre requires two stage managers for their first season in May.

Position Description

Eagle’s Nest Theatre currently has two shows, Romeo and Juliet and Cosi, in or about to start rehearsals for which we need to find stage managers.

BOTH POSITIONS require someone who is available to start immediately.

COSI
Cosi will be staged at the Northcote Town Hall from May 10 – 30. In addition to the performances at the theatre Cosi will give a number of schools matinees where we take the show to the school. In addition to the performance commitments the Stage manager for this show will need to be available for night time rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursdays as well as on Sunday days.

ROMEO and JULIET
Romeo and Juliet is a repertoire touring production which will be available throughout 2010. The way that this will work is that the cast and crew will be given 6 weeks notice prior to any bookings. IN addition to the ongoing touring commitments this show will also have a short season of performances at the Northcote Town Hall from May 24 – 30
In addition to the performance commitments the Stage manager for this show will have some general duties assisting the director in the organization of rehearsals but will not be required to attend all rehearsals.

Payment details
Payment for these positions is on a profit share basis.

Experience/Skills
The key things we will be looking for are passion, commitment and organisational/communication skills. Previous experience as a Stage Manager certainly doesn’t hurt – but it is NOT A MUST – if you’ve got what it takes then we won’t shy away from giving a first timer a go.

‘Alaska’ is about a group of young people working in a cinemaplex and coming to terms with race, sexuality and finding their direction in life. It received rave reviews after its debut in London in 2007. As the ‘Independent’ reviewed:

“D C Moore’s debut is a searing and uncomfortable probing of prejudice in all its forms, from the offensive jokes and lazy stereotyping which pepper idle conversation to the out and out racist rants of the play\‘s anti-hero. This bigot is Frank, a university drop-out who now works at the local multiplex where he spends his breaks smoking and playing Dictators Top Trumps. It’s only when Mamta, an “Asian Babe” arrives and becomes his boss that he gives full vent to his white supremacist beliefs. And he makes a nasty habit of forcing his views on anyone who will listen, much as he forces unwanted cigarettes, booze and, occasionally, sex on them too.”

This powerful and urgent co-op production will provide an amazing and rewarding opportunity for all involved as well as potentially being part of a new and exciting independent season at a great Sydney venue.
