“Summary*

Audition notice for two males, 18 – 25 years, for two leads in the highly successful work Narrow as the Line by upcoming playwright N. Gregory Finger to be performed at the King Street Theatre for the Sydney Fringe in September.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, two of the lead roles are in need of recasting. This is an excellent opportunity for young, upcoming and dedicated actors to break out onto the Sydney Theatre Stage.

Synopsis

“Narrow as the Line is a funny, evocative and ultimately tragic portrayal of the effects of trench warfare on the human psyche. Set on the Western Front during the height of World War the play follows two days in the life of the 3rd Battalion’s officers. It’s cold, it’s wet, and they’re expecting a German offensive at any moment, yet in true Aussie tradition they attempt to make the best of a bad lot: jokes, stories, and games; anything to take their minds off the reality of the situation. But on the front the horror can never be escaped for long and ultimately they are shown to be caught in the perpetual repetition of what is their daily routine. Slowly the routine of war become the everyday, until it goes unnoticed. When even war and death can become a routine for an individual what does that mean for society? As the second act picks up it becomes clear that the characters are now stuck not only in the First World War, but in a never ending repetition of every war through history. “

Role Descriptions

Parts: 2 male leads.
Ages: 18-25

Thomas Parsons: The protagonist. Embittered by his war experience he starts the play distant and unwilling to engage with his fellow soldiers. As the play continues he descends into alcoholism, with humorous result.

Elliott Cohen: The best friend and a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. He is determined to see things in their best light and not let the misery of the trenches weigh down on him. He is the driving force of the first act.

Audition Information

Wednesday 12th of June: 4-7pm
Friday 14th of June: 4-7pm
Saturday 15th of June: 12-4pm

Auditions to be held at Macquarie University, Venue TBA – please request details upon submitting application.

No preparation is required. You will be doing cold reads and will (most likely) be doing a workshop which requires you to interact with other cast members – this will however be subject to call backs or necessity.

Audition Pre-Requisites

You are required to bring an acting resume, and headshot if possible (otherwise one will be taken on the day for identification purposes)

Experience is preferred but not essential.

What is essential is commitment. Applicants must be upfront about university, work, family and personal commitments. These will definitely be factored in when determining the best candidate.

Upon accepting the role you are expected to attend all rehearsals and be available for any extra rehearsals (if required) leading up to the run, and above all you MUST be available for all performance dates. No exceptions.

If you cannot guarantee any of the above requirements, this will seriously disadvantage your chances.

Rehearsal Commitment and Performance Dates

Rehearsals will be two days a week (preferably regular days) beginning in mid to late June. Times will be subject to availability of the cast (most likely in the evening). The number of rehearsals will increase to three or four a week as the Fringe approaches or as needed.

Bump in: 23rd September

Run: 24th – 29th of September at 7:30pm (Call time: 6pm)

(Show runs for just over an hour. There may be a Q and A session after each performance. This is TBA)

Script and Performance History
The script has been in production since early 2011. It has received feedback from previous performances and professional playwrights at Playwriting Australia which has led to a highly developed and polished work, tried and tested in front of audiences and critics alike. The playwright is a PhD student in English Literature specialising in twentieth Century Drama. He is the recipient of Australian Post Graduate Award, a government grand award for academic excellence. He is a theatre reviewer and continues to produce high quality plays which will undoubtedly take to the stage in coming years.

The Sydney Fringe will be Narrow as the Line’s third run, making for a total of 21 performances. Its second run was reviewed by Australian Stage to great acclaim. Please follow the below link to read more:

Desirable Skills and Experience

Strong vocal and physical ability and control
Excellent communication skills, the ability to work as part of a small team, with a high level of autonomy and self-motivation
Physical theatre, Epic/Brechtian theatre and stage combat experience is desirable but not required.
Singing and Dancing experience. Training is desirable but not required

AUDITIONS
Auditions will be held in central Penrith, close to public transport access.
Initial auditions will be held on Saturday 1 June, Sunday 2 June and Friday 7 June 2013:

You will be allocated a 15 minute audition timeslot.
Please prepare a 2-minute monologue from a piece of 20th or 21st Century theatre,
You will be redirected in your piece and may be required to sing. (NB: this is not a musical! The ability to hold a note is desired but not required).

Successful first round applicants will be offered a Callback Audition from Friday 14 – Sunday 16 June 2013 for an ensemble audition. Applicants successful in the Callback round will be made an offer and called in to talk over the concept, availability and the agreement.

This production of Sweeney Todd will present a unique culture shift for the Newcastle and Hunter Valley theatre scene. Created as a fairytale musical for adults, the characters in Shining Armour believe that the ‘rules’ of fairytales apply to their existence. There are designated heroes, kidnapped princesses, and little girls are never allowed out into the woods. Except that their world is no more magical than our own, and such a misunderstanding can cause an awful lot of trouble… With a brilliant score by Lore Burns and Ephiny Gale, and with direction from critically acclaimed theatre director Karra Peppler, musical fans will adore this latest offering from exciting new production company TrailerParkProductions.

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for this production.
This is an unpaid performance however as it is part of the 2013 Performance Season at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre it therefore requires a significant amount of commitment and dedication to the process.
Rehearsals begin from 1 September 2013, for 3 days per week (Tuesday and Thursday evening – 7pm to 10pm – and Sunday – 10am to 3pm) until show opening.
As part of Liverpool Performing Arts Ensemble’s and Casula Powerhouse’s commitment to education, all successful actors may be required to stay after the Wednesday performance for a Q&A.
Performance times are as follows:
Wednesday 30 October, 11am
Thursday 31 October, 8pm (official industry opening night, including canapés and drinks)
Friday 1 November, 11am and 8pm
Saturday 2 November, 11am and 8pm

Synopsis
What happens when you cross an older yet still-attractive, overly refined Southern Belle, and a rising member of the industrial workforce?

A Streetcar Named Desire tells the story of Blanche Dubois, a Southern Belle whose pretensions to virtue and culture only thinly mask alcoholism and delusions of grandeur. Her poise is an illusion she presents to shield others (but most of all, herself) from her reality, and an attempt to continue to make herself attractive to new male suitors. Blanche’s depressing and heartbreaking past leads her to her sister Stella, in a poor but charming apartment in the French Quarter of New Orleans, however her destructive relationship with Stella’s husband Stanley triggers a wave of emotions which aim to break her.
