Impossible Theatre is looking for an experienced, capable and enthusiastic costume designer who can help bring an authentic realism to the wardrobe of our characters. You need to be able to meet agreed timelines, be reliable and have great time management skills.

ABOUT | Impossible Theatre

Based in Melbourne, Impossible Theatre is currently developing a series of plays inspired by the work of Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.

We intend to stage a bilingual play focused on the experimental and surrealist characteristics of texts by Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, while grappling with the visual challenges presented by them and the physical work on stage. We would also like to include elements related to his biography highlighting certain moments in his life.

We visualise an eclectic play in terms of performing styles, aesthetic approach, language and topics – all these key elements meet a common purpose in Lorca’s artistic proposal and experiences. The inclusion of Federico Garcia Lorca as one of the characters and the cultural-historic elements that inspired his work will help articulate the liaison between plays.

The use of Spanish is another multicultural element to be treated within the scenic language as well as the silent film influences and avant-garde movements in relation to the artistic design.

ABOUT | The Plays Of Federico Garcia Lorca
Spanish poet and dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca was a talented artist and a member of the ‘Generation of 1927’, a group of writers who advocated avant-gardism in literature. In 1929-30 García Lorca lived in the city of New York, on the campus of Columbia University. Unable to speak English he suffered a deep culture shock.

“Buster Keaton’s Stroll”, “The Maiden, the Sailor and the Student” and “Chimera” are three of Lorca’s best-known “impossible plays” which first appeared in his avant-garde magazine ‘Gallo’.

Since its inception in 2008, Sydney based indie theatre company subtlenuance has produced nine original works.

In 2011, in collaboration with some of Sydney’s most exciting established and emerging artists, we presented the inaugural Bare boards Brave heart. This festival of works for solo performers received a tremendous response:

The Primate Perspective

We believe solo performances are a unique opportunity to focus on the heart and soul of theatre: extraordinary acting and writing.

So in 2012 we’re doing it again!

subtlenuance is inviting writers to submit scripts that are:

· designed to be performed by a single actor.
· between 5 and 25 minutes in running time.
· original and not previously performed.
· not extracts from larger works, but are self-contained and complete.
· not reliant on lighting or sound effects or props or set.
· of any genre, but explore the theme “engagement”.

So what do we mean by engagement?
Not romance. Not war.
Something like:
Taking part. Turning up. Being involved. Reaching out. Not retreating. Not withdrawing. Having a vision, and making it happen. Standing up, and being counted. Speaking out. Not confusing silence for safety. Not pretending cynicism is empowering. Not backing down. Embracing a larger vision of self. Refusing atomisation. Knowing it takes a village. Accepting responsibility. Getting your hands dirty. Committing to a cause. Standing your ground. Stepping up to the plate. Changing the world. Moving and shaking. Wholeheartedness. Dedication.

Subversions of the theme are welcome.

Writers will not be charged a fee nor will they receive royalties for performances of their play in the festival. Participation will be on a voluntary basis. Writers only give permission for their play to be performed as part of the festival. They retain all copyright and performance rights.

subtlenuance is committed to a creative process that maximises opportunities for artists to meet, share and learn from one another. To facilitate this, we ask that scripts only be submitted by Sydney based writers.

Please submit scripts by Thursday 5 April 2012.

Accepted writers will be notified on Friday 27 April 2012.
Accepted scripts will then be matched with a director and an actor.

The festival will occur mid year at a venue yet to be announced.
We anticipate at least five public performances of the chosen works.

Role – Designers 2012 Program

Work closely with the Director & fellow company members to create a clear design aesthetic for each production
Produce designs and source materials within the company schedule and budget, as communicated by the Production Manager
Designers report to the Director
Payment will be a profit share agreement with company members.

Previous theatre design experience
Excellent communication and coordinating skills
Adherence to schedules and budgets
Proven ability to work under time constraints
Proactive problem solver
Passionate about developing performing arts in Western Sydney

Responsible for Set & Props Design and Production
Experience in CAD, Vectorworks or similar software platforms to produce design plans is desired
Model-making skills and construction experience to develop and produce design is desired

Producers are calling for professional and emerging writers, of all cultural backgrounds, genders and sexual orientation, to submit original works for The Mardi Gras Colour Blind Project for 2012. The project aims to challenge the stereotypes of what represents “Gay Sydney” and bring the Sydney LGBT community into the 21st Century.

Your work must be an original response to one or many of the themes below:

➢ “I’m getting married in the morning”

➢ “Where do gay babies come from?”

➢ “Once your over 30 and gay, your as good as dead”

➢ “What’s down Mary’s Lane?”

➢ “Bisexuality? … Now that’s just being greedy”

We are looking for works that are innovative and evocative and cover a range of styles and genres.
Works must be between 45-60 minutes in length and can feature as many or as few characters as you like. Playwrights with works in early development are encouraged to apply.

Submission requirements:
All applicants must submit the following components in order to be considered for The Mardi Gras Colour Blind Project 2012. The components are:

➢ Completed application form

➢ 1 page synopsis of your play

➢ 1st draft or first 3-5 pages

➢ 2 examples of previous plays (short or full-length) that you have written

Explore the whole gamut of image making and use your own experiences of Change & Consequence. Work alongside experienced artists such as Robin Whitmore (UK), Bernie Regan (AUS), Victoria Hunt (AUS), MEEM (AUS), Joey Ruigrok Van der Werven (AUS) and more

MACHINE ATLAS uses a devising process where young people aged 16-25 from all walks of life create machines ‘explaining’ their life decisions. Initially inspired by the chain reaction in Back to the Future, (that propels the car and the protagonist back in time at optimum velocity) this free outdoor performance event will revisit moments that have changed our lives through choice, accident, or necessity.

Using soft-machines, the Laws of Motion, Action Sculpture, apparatus, faux technical and scientific dialogue, pop & sci-fi films, and dance, MACHINE ATLAS promises to be an unforgettable event.

Inspired by performer collectives and individuals from around the world who invent, design, build, record and perform all their own work. Shopfront is looking for a motivated group of up to 20 young people and emerging artists aged 16-26 to be involved in this year’s Major Project.
